Why Nick Slaughter is more relevant today than ever

A blog review worth sharing

And how you can help spread the inspiring message

of non-violent protest

We're always thrilled when we learn that another review has been written about our film. So when The Autonomous Zone tweeted that they'd reviewed SLAUGHTER NICK FOR PRESIDENT, naturally, we were quick to click the link.

But this review got us really excited because the blogger has truly identified the usefulness of the film's deeper message -- and why it's relevant right now. In reviewing the film, The Autonomous Zone urges those rising up against injustice today, in places like Ferguson and Baltimore, to take a page from the playbook of the Serbian student movement of the '90s. After all, that extraordinary movement helped topple a brutal dictator -- through the power of non-violent protest.

Just think of what we all can accomplish when we use humour and intelligence -- dubbed "laughtivism" by revolutionary Srdja Popovic -- to promote social justice.

And if you enjoyed watching SLAUGHTER NICK FOR PRESIDENT and find The Autonomous Zone review interesting and relevant, please share it! Your help in spreading the word is invaluable.

Rob chats with Canada AM about the "crazy" story

If you didn't catch the show live yesterday, here's Rob's morning chat with Bev Thomson on national broadcaster CTV's Canada AM.

Bev calls it a "crazy" story and she's right! Another high-profile media person who just happened to head up Canada's national public broadcaster said of our film, "I love quirky stories of Canadians abroad." But the dear old pubcaster itself took a pass on our project. Such is the great risk attached to little indie projects like ours. And so, it makes us proud to say that our "little indie film that could" is garnering great reviews and international coverage, and audiences have really connected with the story. And we're not stopping there! Domestic distributor Indiecan Entertainment, headed by tireless indie film crusader Avi Federgreen, is working really hard with yours truly to get this film seen by as many Canadians as possible. Next stop, the world! Stay tuned for more details on worldwide releases.

For more information on where and how you can see the documentary, sign up for our email newsletter here. Coming soon to a screen near you!

No revolutions, please. We're Canadian.

Screenwriter Jim Henshaw in his blog, The Legion of Decency, asks the question, "How come Canadian artists are causing revolutions everywhere but Canada?" and gets right to the heart of the matter. Have your say -- do you think Canadian TV honchos are out-of-touch with audiences?

Chicago and Toronto!

Hey, fans! Sorry for being so silent here on the blog for so long. Indie filmmaking requires a lot of different hats to be worn by too few people and so, unfortunately, the blogger hat was hanging for too long on the hat rack. But we're back! And here's the press release that went out last week announcing some good news...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Toronto ON - April 2, 2013) - Feature documentary SLAUGHTER NICK FOR PRESIDENT, which chronicles the absurd fame of Canadian actor Rob Stewart in Serbia, continues its festival run as an official selection at the Chicago International Movies & MusicFestival (CIMMfest) April 18-21, 2013. The film will screen on Friday, April 19 at 6pm at the Society for Arts.

The doc made its world premiere in Toronto at North by Northeast Music & Film Festival last June, was an official selection at Cinema City International Film Fest in Serbia and rounded out the year by taking home Best Documentary at the Zagreb International Film Festival -- an honour which touched the filmmakers immensely.  “It was very gratifying for us because our documentary, which features the story of the non-violent Serbian resistance movement, won this award in Croatia, a country that Serbian dictator Milosevic was bombing two decades ago. Most of our audience at the Zagreb screening weren’t even aware that there was a Serbian peace movement since the information was suppressed by the Milosevic regime at the time,” explains producer/co-director, Liza Vespi.

Avi Federgreen’s Indiecan Entertainment, which holds all domestic rights, will launch SLAUGHTER NICK FOR PRESIDENT on its Canadian theatrical release in Toronto at the Carlton Cinema, May 10-16.
